Q: How far away from each other will it work

I purchased 40 metres of speaker cable to run intercom from main house to the cabin in our garden and it works fine. Sound is not fantastically clear but clear enough to let the Mrs know the kettles on!

Q: how do i put the batteries inside ?

There is a cover on the back of the main unit open that and insert batteries

Q: If i wanted to extend the cable length. What type of cable would i use?

Must admit the cable I got was very long but if you need a new one I would take the old cable that was supplied to Homebase or B & Q and they would know. Sorry I don't know what the lead is called this is the best I can say to you.
